Blossfeldt Fractals

My latest project is Blossfeldt Fractals. It is a generative composition of plant forms based on photographs by Karl Blossfeldt. The gorwing algorithms used is similar to L-System, but with additional image processing functions.

Don't forget to check out the video which describes the process of making Blossfeldt Fractals.

Vector Field - Moving particles on a vector field.

Differential Steering

code_differentialsteering.gif

Differential Steering - An algorithm of differential steering. The car will either spin, curve, or forward depending on its wheels' speed.

Collinearity

code_collinear.gif

Collinearity - Calculate whether a number of points are on a straight line.

Golden Ratio

code_goldenratio.gif

Golden Ratio - Fractal-like division of space using the golden ratio.

Winding

form_winding.jpg

Inspired by Paul Klee's idea of "Taking the Line for a Walk", Winding mixes cellular automata with drawing. Each vertex of a line is a cellular automaton, which will also move according to the states of itself and its neighbors.

Greetings

Season's greetings to my friends, before I drink too much beers. O Christmas Tree! O Snowflake!

Fleece

form_fleece.jpg

A field of lines moving gently, tracking the intersections of invisible circles.

Fleece is originally developed for the Software Structure project (with Casey Reas, Jared Tarbell, and Robert Hodgin), commissioned by Whitney Museum's ArtPort.

Plankton

Plankton cells drifting upwards and gently bumping into each other. Plankton is originally developed for the Software Structure project (with Casey Reas, Jared Tarbell, and Robert Hodgin), commissioned by Whitney Museum's ArtPort.

Snowflake

Endless variations of snowflake forms generated by simple rules of symmetry and branching.

Pond

Autonomous small fish swarm around their liquid environment, at times attracted by a ripple, at times chased by the big fish. Pond is originally developed for the exhibition section at processing.org.

Tumtum Tree

nature_tumtumtree.jpg

Tumtum Tree is a dynamic robotic pot-plant, actively maximizing the photosynthesis of your beloved little plant by moving its 3 legs in awkward ways.

It is part of my graduate thesis Nature and Machine, shown at the Royal College of Art Show in 2001.

Eichstatt

A reactive hyrid plant that grows, blossoms, and withers. The leaves and flowers are picked from The Garden of Eichstatt, a 17th century botanical book. Eichstatt is an online version of an interactive installation (with jars and suction cups) shown at the Royal College of Art Show in 2001.

Cell

A single cell leading a single life inside a tank. Feed it with pixels and watch it grow obese in its soliture, lest it shrink and die alone.

Lsys

Based on the Lindenmayer system, Lsys has an easy-to-use interface and allows you to draw trees, ferns, snowflakes, or simply a profound mess.

Bacteria

Each bacteria cell divides and generates new cells, but cells will attack each other and turn pale as their energy drops.
