When I was a child, I would drip oily ink on a bowl of water, stir gently with a tooth pick, and enjoy immensely the changing forms and patterns on the water surface.
When I became a man, I did pretty much the same thing here.
Vector field describes the strength and direction of (invisible) forces on a plane. When we can describe the forces, we can then illustrate how things will move, when dropped onto the field.
This is a simple implementation of the concept — and probably not a scientific one. But art does not reproduce the visible, it makes visible...
