Thompson Lamp

Have you heard of the Thompson Lamp?

It turns itself on for one hour, then off for 1/2 hour, on again for 1/4 hour, off for 1/8 hour, and so on, for exactly two hours. Will the lamp be on or off by then? No one knows.

If time is infinitely divisible, actions and thoughts must be infinitely divisible also. Here, somewhere in the infinity of the present, the rational mind breaks down. Our brain sorts through a series of broken images, and thinks that they make sense.

But do they?

Perhaps the human mind can only understand when things are chopped and measured in discrete units, when there are intervals of beginning and end, even within the span of infinity. In this sense, a human being manages his thoughts like a computer.
